James Dobson's Focus on the Family is a 501 C-3. (Actually there was quite a bit of talk about this today over at dkos.) One significance of their C-3 status is that they cannot sell their merchandise per se; instead, they ask for suggested donations.
This in mind, I went over to their website today (family.org) and ordered a book--something about heartwarming stories related to tsunami survivors. When I went through the checkout process, there was some rather adament text "suggesting" that I "donate" $9. I went ahead and declined.
End result: $9 bucks less for SpongeDob StickyPants to harrass gays, teachers, and Democrats with.
Anybody else want to join in the fun? I liked the book so much, I'm thinking about getting some more stuff!
From 9news.com:
This bill hasn't been passed by the full Senate yet, only by the Business, Labor and Technology Committee; but the point is that it was passed there on a party line vote: Democrats for families, Republicans for business. Absolutely beautiful.
As coloradopols.com points out, this is a clear indication that if made to choose, Republicans are going to defend business against absolutely everything: Soccer moms, Nascar Dads, 5-year olds with lolly-pops, whatever.
This is great legislature and an example that should be emulated by Dems from states across the country, as well as by the national party. Yet another great idea from Western Dems.
Anybody know of some other good, Dem wedge legislature, particularly in the category of families against business?
As a native of Cincinnati, Ohio, I am continually embarrassed by Jerry Springer. Formerly a respected news anchorman and then Cincinnati's mayor, he went on to create one of the most terrible shows on television. In the U.S., and around the world, his name is recognized in connection with a show that features and makes light of the worst sorts of behaviour and--what is worse--the saddest problems of the poorer and less educated classes of American society: just those folks that Democrats profess to defend. But now the guy wants to run for Governor of Ohio. And to get some more attention, he's starting a radio talk show, the ad for which began appearing very prominently (top slot) on mydd.com today.
Apparently more comfortable in her Senate seat following the 58-38 spanking she gave Republican challenger Bill Jones in November, she now seems to be stepping into that role of principled defender of Democratic values--regardless of the fallout that might result from such stands. I think it's still a little early to make Paul Wellstone comparisons, but nonetheless, we are very proud of Senator Boxer.
So here's my question. What would the dkos community like to see Senator Boxer do next? No we can't determine her every move, but we can give her a wish list, right?
